TOEIC Part 5 Vocabulary and Collocations

Four options can share a workplace topic while only one completes the sentence.

The venue has been ______ booked until the organizers pay the deposit on Friday.

A. provision B. provisional C. provisionally D. provisioning

Provisionally is the answer. The blank modifies booked, so it needs an adverb. The surrounding condition also fits the meaning: the booking is real for now but awaits confirmation. Choosing by topic alone—“all these words look like provision”—misses both the grammar slot and the status.

ETS currently lists TOEIC Listening & Reading Part 5 as Incomplete Sentences. It sits in the 100-question Reading section, alongside Part 6 Text Completion and Part 7 Reading Comprehension. Part 5 rewards fast integration of sentence grammar, natural word partnerships, and the exact workplace sense.

This guide teaches four profile-backed vocabulary systems: tentative, provisional, streamline, and mitigate. The goal is not to predict test items. It is to make four repeatable decisions under Part 5 conditions. Continue in the TOEIC vocabulary hub and browse all exam pathways in Exam English.

Use four filters, in order

When options look related, ask:

1. Grammar slot: Does the gap need a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb?
2. Local pattern: Which preposition, object, or partner is natural?
3. Workplace sense: What exact status or action does the sentence describe?
4. Whole-sentence logic: Do time markers and conditions support that choice?

These filters prevent two common errors: selecting a word from the right topic but wrong word class, and selecting a grammatical option whose meaning does not fit.

1. Tentative: proposed, not firmly decided

Tentative commonly describes a date, plan, agreement, conclusion, explanation, or first step that is not yet firm:

The team set a tentative launch date of 8 June, subject to client approval.

Natural combinations include:

• tentative date / schedule / plan
• tentative agreement
• tentative conclusion
• tentatively scheduled

The adjective often reflects uncertainty, caution, or lack of commitment. That uncertainty may concern a decision—a tentative date—or the strength of a judgment—a tentative conclusion.

Do not assume tentative means temporary. A temporary office is definitely being used for a limited period. A tentative office location is merely proposed or uncertain. Also, a tentative person may act hesitantly, but that human-behavior sense should not be forced into every business sentence.

Word form matters:

We have reached a tentative agreement. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.

The first gap modifies a noun; the second modifies a participle.

2. Provisional: in force for now, awaiting confirmation

Provisional describes an interim arrangement, result, approval, booking, or figure that has present validity but is not final:

The agency issued provisional approval pending a safety inspection.

Useful combinations include:

• provisional approval
• provisional booking
• provisional schedule
• provisional figures / results
• provisionally approved / booked / scheduled

The boundary with tentative is important but not absolute. Both can mark something as non-final. Tentative foregrounds uncertainty or lack of firm commitment; provisional foregrounds an interim status that operates for now while a condition or final decision is pending.

Compare:

The managers suggested a tentative date for discussion.

The date is a cautious proposal.

The conference has been provisionally booked for that date, pending payment.

A working reservation exists, but confirmation depends on payment.

A fair Part 5 item supplies the condition or action that makes one interpretation stronger. Without it, both words may fit.

3. Streamline: simplify a process to improve flow

To streamline a process, system, operation, or procedure is to remove unnecessary complexity or friction so it works more efficiently:

The new portal will streamline the reimbursement process by eliminating duplicate forms.

Common objects include process, procedure, workflow, operations, and approval system. The object is something with steps or structure. The sentence should identify an efficiency mechanism when possible.

The verb does not simply mean make smaller. A company can reduce its budget without streamlining anything. Nor does it necessarily mean automate: software may streamline a workflow, but a clearer paper form can do so too.

Useful forms are:

• verb: The change will streamline approvals.
• adjective/participle: a streamlined approval process
• noun/gerund: Streamlining the process reduced delays.

Avoid vague claims such as streamline productivity. Productivity is usually the hoped-for result; the process or workflow is what gets streamlined.

4. Mitigate: reduce severity, not erase the problem

To mitigate a risk, effect, impact, loss, or harmful consequence is to reduce its seriousness or harmful force:

The supplier added a second warehouse to mitigate the risk of regional disruption.

Natural patterns include:

• mitigate risk / damage / impact / effects
• measures to mitigate a problem
• mitigate against is used by some speakers, but the direct-object pattern is clearer and more economical for the standard “reduce severity” sense

The verb does not mean eliminate. A backup warehouse may mitigate delivery risk while leaving some risk in place. If the sentence says the danger disappeared completely, eliminate or remove may be more precise.

Word-family choices often reveal the slot:

The company adopted several mitigation measures. Insurance can mitigate the financial impact of a delay.

The first blank modifies measures with a noun used attributively; the second follows a modal and therefore needs the base verb.

Answer and evidence grid

Collocation can outrank topic

Suppose all four options concern improvement:

The revised checklist is designed to ______ the risk of missing a safety inspection.

A. streamline B. mitigate C. tentative D. provision

Only mitigate fits all four filters. The slot needs a base verb after to. Mitigate risk is a natural combination. The action reduces the seriousness or likelihood of a harmful outcome. Streamline would require a process-like object: streamline the inspection workflow.

Now change the object:

The revised checklist is designed to ______ the inspection workflow by removing two duplicate approvals.

Here streamline wins. The object is a workflow, and the by-phrase names unnecessary steps being removed. Vocabulary choice depends on the relationship, not just the workplace topic.

Read conditions as status evidence

Part 5 sentences often contain compact clues:

• subject to approval: not firmly decided
• pending inspection/payment/review: an interim status awaits a condition
• by removing duplicate steps: a process becomes simpler or more efficient
• reduce, but not eliminate: severity is mitigated
• may be revised: figures or arrangements are non-final

These phrases do not mechanically map to one word in every sentence. They narrow the evidence. Grammar still has to agree.

Consider:

The venue is ______ reserved pending payment.

The gap needs an adverb. Provisionally is stronger than tentatively if a working reservation exists and payment is the stated confirmation condition. If the sentence only said organizers were considering the venue, tentative would be more likely.

Common mistakes

• Matching options to the general topic without identifying the grammar slot.
• Treating tentative and provisional as perfectly interchangeable.
• Assuming provisional means unreal; the interim status may already be operative.
• Using streamline for any reduction, even when no process is simplified.
• Writing streamline efficiency instead of naming the process improved.
• Using mitigate to claim complete elimination.
• Ignoring a modal, auxiliary, article, or preposition immediately beside the gap.
• Selecting a noun because it shares the visible root with the sentence topic.

Answers: 1 B; the adjective follows is, and an operative interim schedule is provisional. 2 C; the proposal is not firm and has no interim booking. 3 B; to requires the base verb, and the object is a process made simpler. 4 C; the sentence explicitly describes partial risk reduction.

Fresh practice

Write six original incomplete sentences about a conference launch. Include two word-form decisions, two collocation decisions, and two status decisions. Give four options per item. Then mark the exact grammatical and semantic evidence for the key. If tentative and provisional still both work, add a condition that clarifies whether the sentence describes a cautious proposal or an operative interim arrangement.
