Iron Out: Word Order, Prepositions, and Verb Forms

Every iron out pattern fills the same slots: iron out, an object, optionally who you're doing it with, and optionally a deadline. Once you see that shape, the collocations stop looking like a list and start looking like one system.

The object slot usually holds the remaining details, issues, kinks, or differences. Don't mechanically point it at a whole plan, budget, deadline, or strategy — name the specific rough edge instead. A process or workflow can still fill the slot when you mean its remaining practical complications, not creating it from scratch.

A pronoun object locks the particle in place: iron it out, iron them out, never iron out it. A noun object stays flexible — iron out the details keeps the verb together, and iron the details out is also correct, just less natural with a long phrase.

When another person or team is involved, with introduces them: iron out the delivery details with the vendor. About, for, and of don't fill that role — with is the preposition that does.

Tense marks how far along the work is. Still ironing out signals it's ongoing. Ironed out signals it's done. Let's iron out the handoff before launch turns the same pattern into a forward-looking proposal.
