De-Risk: Grammar and Sentence Patterns

Learn how to name the undertaking, method, and timing, use de-risking and de-risked, and choose the right preposition and spelling.

In this lesson

The core shape is de-risk plus the undertaking, with two optional add-ons. Add by and a method: 'de-risk the launch by piloting it in one region.' Add before and a milestone: 'de-risk the deal before signing.' Same object slot, two different add-ons - how, and when.

The same idea has a noun form and an adjective form. De-risking is the activity: 'we need a clear de-risking plan before the board meeting.' De-risked is the after-state: 'the roadmap is now largely de-risked.' Notice largely - the adjective form still needs a hedge, not an absolute.

De-risk's patterns all radiate from one core move: name the undertaking, then optionally add how and when. Grammar gives you a noun and an adjective form of the same idea, and one domain even swaps the preposition. Learn the shape, and every pattern below is just a fill-in.

One domain breaks the no-preposition rule. In finance, the pattern still takes a direct object with no preposition: de-risk the portfolio, a de-risking glide path. But in the supply-chain sense, from is required: de-risk our supplier base from over-reliance on one region. Same verb, one preposition swap.

One more variant, not a pattern: derisk, unhyphenated, is an accepted spelling - you'll see it in Slack and informal writing. De-risk, hyphenated, is the more standard, slightly more formal default. Neither is a spelling error; they're a register choice.
