Seamless and compatible describe two very different points on the same path from "these could theoretically connect" to "nobody notices the connection."
"Compatible" means two systems can technically work together at all, even if only tested in a lab. "Seamless" means they work together smoothly in actual live use -- and an unproven lab connection doesn't earn either "seamless" or "integrated." Compatibility is the lowest bar: the systems can exchange data at all. Seamlessness requires that the connection is not just possible but actually running smoothly in real, live use, with no visible disruption.
The test: proven possible, or actually running live?
"A new expense tool can technically connect to the accounting system and exchange data, but only in a lab test -- no live workflow uses it yet. That's compatible, not 'a seamless integration.'"
The systems can talk to each other -- that's real, and it's not nothing. But nobody's actual work depends on that connection yet. It's a proof of concept, not a lived experience, and "compatible" is exactly as far as the evidence goes.
"Once that same connection is running in daily use with no manual re-entry required, it becomes accurate to call it seamless."
Same two systems, same underlying connection -- but now it's carrying real, daily work, and nobody has to manually bridge any gap in it. That's the gap between "can connect" and "does connect smoothly, every day, for real people."
