PTE Core Answer Short Question Vocabulary Practice

Published Updated 5 min read Editorial standards

PTE Core Answer Short Question rewards precise retrieval, not an extended performance. Pearson currently says you hear a 3–9-second question, may also see an image, and answer with one word or a few words. The recording plays once, and the listed response time is 10 seconds.

Prepare by connecting a label to its defining feature. Use the PTE Core Vocabulary Practice hub for context-rich vocabulary and the PTE Core speaking vocabulary map for the other speaking tasks.

Learn contrasts, not loose lists

Similar words become easier to retrieve when their boundaries are clear:

  • receipt: evidence of a completed purchase;
  • invoice: a document listing an amount due;
  • refund: money returned after payment;
  • reimbursement: money repaid for an eligible expense.

Likewise, a tenant rents from a landlord; a passenger travels in a vehicle while a pedestrian travels on foot; a reservation holds a place while an appointment arranges a meeting or service at a set time.

Say the shortest complete answer that identifies the expected concept. If the answer is thermometer, “a thermometer” is sufficient; a definition adds delay without making the label more accurate.

Places and services

  1. Where do people usually collect prescription medicine? A pharmacy.
  2. What place lends books to the public? A library.
  3. Where do train passengers wait before boarding? A platform.
  4. What office handles letters and parcels? A post office.
  5. Where might a person report a lost wallet to law enforcement? A police station.
  6. What place stores goods before distribution? A warehouse.
  7. Where are legal cases heard and decided? A courthouse.
  8. What desk in a hotel usually handles arrivals? Reception / the front desk.

Review by function: dispensing, lending, boarding, shipping, storing, deciding, and checking in.

People and roles

  1. What do you call a person who rents a home? A tenant.
  2. What do you call the owner who rents that home to someone? A landlord.
  3. Who receives and assists visitors at a front desk? A receptionist.
  4. What do you call a person walking beside or across a road? A pedestrian.

  6. Who examines financial records for accuracy? An auditor.
  7. Who is responsible for guiding a group of employees? A supervisor / manager.
  8. What do you call someone who applies for a job? An applicant.

Where two ordinary labels are possible, the question's wording and context control the expected level of specificity.

Understanding is only the first step.

Documents and objects

  1. What document proves that you paid for a purchase? A receipt.

  7. What document shows planned departure and arrival times? A timetable / schedule.

American English note: driver's license and schedule are natural forms here. Do not change an official provider label, but keep your own vocabulary notes consistent.

Processes and actions

  1. What do we call moving an appointment to a later time? Postponing / rescheduling it.
  2. What is money returned after a purchase called? A refund.

  7. What do we call putting a plan into operation? Implementation.
  8. What is an official change made to correct an error? A correction / amendment.

Notice word families: verify / verification, register / registration, implement / implementation. A question may cue the noun through “What process...” or the verb through “What do you do...”

  2. What measurement describes how long something lasts? Duration.
  3. What is the maximum amount a container can hold? Capacity.

  7. What measurement describes how far two places are apart? Distance.
  8. What is a repeated event occurring every year called? An annual event.

Retrieval routine

Use three steps:

  1. identify the requested category: person, place, object, process, or measurement;
  2. isolate the defining feature;
  3. produce one word or a short noun phrase promptly.

Question: “What do we call money paid back to an employee for approved travel costs?” Category: financial process. Feature: paid back after expense. Answer: reimbursement.

Do not begin with “I think it might be...” Those words consume time and weaken a response that should be direct.

Diagnose a missed answer

Label the cause:

  • unknown word: learn the label and feature;
  • confused neighbor: contrast it with the chosen word;
  • slow access: use timed category drills;
  • misheard question: practice question frames;
  • too broad: learn a more specific category;
  • overanswered: rehearse one-word or short-phrase delivery.

If you answered bill when the question said “proof of completed payment,” write a contrast card for bill vs receipt rather than memorizing receipt again without context.
