This article concerns the Duolingo English Test rather than the Duolingo app. Writing tasks require different vocabulary decisions: describe only visible evidence in a photo, develop rather than repeat an earlier response, and sustain a clear position in a longer sample.

Describe a photo without writing a story
Two people are seated across from each other at a table. One is pointing to a page, while the other appears to be taking notes.
Across from gives location. While connects simultaneous actions. Appears to be marks an inference. The image does not prove that they are colleagues, negotiating, or preparing for an exam.
Understanding is only the first step.
Lyra Practice helps you retrieve and use high-value workplace expressions in realistic situations until they feel natural.

First response: public libraries remain valuable because they provide books and quiet study space.
Weak follow-up:
Libraries are valuable because they have books and quiet places.
Developed follow-up:
Their value also extends beyond physical resources. Libraries can provide reliable internet access and staff guidance, which matters for people who cannot access those services at home.
Extends beyond signals expansion. Which matters for explains relevance instead of repeating the claim.
Control an extended position
Use a simple structure: position, reason, example, limitation, conclusion.
Cities should preserve some car-free public spaces because these areas can make walking safer and support local activity. For example, a street closed to through-traffic may provide room for markets or outdoor seating. Such policies can inconvenience drivers, so access for deliveries and residents still needs a clear plan. On balance, targeted restrictions are more defensible than a complete citywide ban.
The conclusion distinguishes targeted restrictions from a complete ban. The concession is real but does not erase the position.
Quick check
- A photo does not establish motive: use appears / definitely intends.
- A follow-up should develop / repeat the first response.
- A policy limits some access: restricts / bans all.
- One example supports but does not illustrate / prove every case.
Answers: 1. appears. 2. develop. 3. restricts. 4. It illustrates.
