Read this short passage and choose the missing sentence.
A city library replaced half of its fixed desks with movable tables. Staff expected the room to become noisier because groups could form more easily. Noise complaints did rise during the first week. [missing sentence] By the end of the month, complaints were below their earlier level because visitors could move group work away from the silent area.
Which sentence fits?
A. Conversely, movable tables are made from lighter materials.
B. Nonetheless, the early increase did not continue.
C. On the contrary, nobody complained during the first week.
D. Whereas the library ordered twelve tables.
The answer is B. The sentence before the gap reports a real drawback: complaints rose. The sentence after it shows that the drawback did not last. Nonetheless keeps the first fact true and introduces what happened despite it.
This is the lexical decision at the heart of many passage-coherence questions: not “Which option contains familiar words?” but “What exact relationship connects the ideas?”
In the Duolingo English Test, Interactive Reading develops one narrative or expository passage through a sequence of activities. These include completing missing sentences, answering comprehension questions, finding the main idea, and choosing a title. Start with the relationship, not the connector
A connector is not decoration. It makes a claim about how two pieces of text fit together.
Consider these five moves:
- A difficulty is true, but something holds despite it: nonetheless.
- The direction of a relationship is reversed: conversely.
- Two explicit cases are contrasted: whereas.
- A previous claim is corrected or denied: on the contrary.
- Competing points lead to one overall judgment: on balance.
These moves can appear inside a missing sentence. They can also help you reject a summary or title that misrepresents the passage. The useful question is always the same: what does the surrounding text license?
Nonetheless: concede a fact and keep going
Use nonetheless when the first point remains true and the second point holds in spite of it.
The first week produced more complaints. Nonetheless, the flexible layout eventually reduced them.
The rise is not denied. The later result is surprising in light of it.
That is different from a result connector:
The room became quieter; therefore, complaints fell.
Therefore says the second point follows from the first. Nonetheless says it holds despite the first.
It is also different from although and despite in grammar. Nonetheless is an adverb. It can begin a new sentence or follow a semicolon:
The pilot was expensive. Nonetheless, the council extended it.
The pilot was expensive; nonetheless, the council extended it.
Do not join two complete sentences with only a comma:
The pilot was expensive, nonetheless the council extended it. ✗
In a reading item, punctuation can therefore rule out an option even when its broad meaning feels close.
Conversely: reverse the relationship
Conversely is stricter than “here is another difference.” It introduces a reversed relationship.
Clear signs help new visitors find books quickly. Conversely, unclear signs make the same search slower.
The direction reverses: clear to unclear, quicker to slower.
Another valid pattern reverses the participants:
The room design affects how groups behave. Conversely, group behavior affects how the room is arranged.
A mere topic change is not enough:
The room design affects group behavior. Conversely, the library also runs children’s events. ✗
The second sentence may be true, but it is not the reverse of the first. If an Interactive Reading option uses conversely, check that you can name the reversed roles, conditions, or result.
Whereas: contrast two explicit cases
Whereas places two people, things, or cases in contrast inside one grammatical structure.
The ground floor allows conversation, whereas the upper floor remains silent.
Both cases are explicit. The contrast is ground floor versus upper floor and conversation versus silence.
The word does not simply mean “however.” It normally needs the other side of the contrast:
Whereas the upper floor remains silent. ✗
That fragment gives only one side. It does not complete the structure.
This makes whereas useful in passage-completion items. Look behind the gap as well as ahead of it. If the blank begins a whereas clause, the main clause must be present and the two cases must be comparable.
Understanding is only the first step.

Start a practice session →On the contrary: correct the earlier claim
On the contrary does not concede a true statement. It rejects or corrects it.
The redesign did not eliminate quiet study. On the contrary, it created a larger silent area upstairs.
The second sentence directly disproves the idea that quiet study disappeared.
Compare that with nonetheless:
The redesign reduced the number of fixed desks. Nonetheless, most visitors found a seat.
Here the reduction stays true. The second fact holds despite it.
This distinction defeats option C in the opening item. The passage explicitly says complaints rose in the first week. On the contrary, nobody complained would erase a stated fact. A connector cannot repair a factual contradiction.
On balance: give the overall judgment
On balance belongs after the text has presented reasons on more than one side. It means “after weighing those considerations, this is the overall judgment.”
The movable tables required staff training and caused short-term noise. They also made the room more useful for group and individual work. On balance, the redesign improved the library.
The phrase does not mean that the two sides are equal. It does not mean “sometimes good, sometimes bad.” It tells you where the writer lands after considering both.
That makes it a strong clue in main-idea and title work. If the final paragraph says on balance, the change was worthwhile, a title such as “Why the redesign completely failed” cannot fit. A title such as “A disruptive change that ultimately improved the library” preserves both the cost and the judgment.
A five-step method for a missing sentence
1. Write the fact before the gap
Do not reduce it to one keyword. Write the proposition.
In the opening item, the proposition is: complaints rose in week one.
2. Write the fact after the gap
Here it is: complaints later fell below the old level.
3. Name the relationship
The early problem was real, yet the final outcome was better. That is concession, not correction, comparison, or reversal.
4. Test the connector’s full claim
Nonetheless keeps the early rise true. On the contrary would deny it. Conversely would require a reverse relationship. Whereas would require a complete two-case contrast.
5. Read the full passage once
The chosen sentence must preserve the passage’s timeline and main point. Local grammar is necessary, but the whole passage decides whether the idea belongs.
Worked Interactive Reading sequence
Read this second passage:
Researchers compared two ways of displaying wait times at a clinic. A precise minute count looked informative, whereas a three-part label—short, moderate, or long—was easier to scan. The minute count often changed before a visitor reached the desk. The broader label was less exact. Nonetheless, visitors made fewer unnecessary inquiries when they saw it. On balance, the simpler display communicated the useful information more effectively.
Complete the sentence
Why does whereas fit the second sentence?
It contrasts two explicit display systems: the precise count and the three-part label. It does not announce a conclusion.
Identify the concession
What fact does nonetheless concede?
The broader label was less exact. The passage does not pretend otherwise. It says fewer inquiries occurred despite that limitation.
Choose the main idea
Which statement is best?
A. Precise information is always less useful than broad labels.
B. Visitors dislike seeing wait times.
C. A less exact display communicated the information visitors needed more effectively.
D. The clinic removed all minute-based displays.
The answer is C. It preserves the comparison, the concession, and the final judgment. A makes an unlimited rule from one study. B and D invent facts.
Choose the title
The best title would be “When less precise information is easier to use.” It captures the apparent tension without turning it into a universal claim.
Common traps
Repeated nouns
An option may repeat clinic, wait time, and visitors while getting the relationship wrong. Topic overlap is not coherence.
A true sentence in the wrong place
“The clinic also offers online appointments” could be true. It still does not connect the two claims around the gap.
Stronger language than the passage
If a passage says a display helped in one clinic, a summary saying it proves all clinics should adopt the system expands the scope. Reject it.
Connector substitution
Do not treat all contrast words as interchangeable. Ask whether the first point remains true, is reversed, is paired with another case, or is corrected.
Grammar without discourse
A sentence can be grammatical and still break the argument. Test form and meaning separately.
Quick check
Choose the best expression in each gap.
- The evening workshop attracted fewer people than expected. ________, those who attended stayed for the full session.
- Longer opening hours increased access. ________, shorter hours made it harder for commuters to visit.
- The old room had fixed seating, ________ the new room can be rearranged.
- The new layout was not less organized. ________, each activity now had a clearly marked area.
- The redesign cost more at first but lowered ongoing staffing pressure. ________, the committee judged it worthwhile.
Answers:
- Nonetheless: the low attendance remains true; the second fact holds despite it.
- Conversely: the condition and result reverse.
- Whereas: two rooms are explicitly contrasted.
- On the contrary: the second sentence corrects the claim that it was less organized.
- On balance: it gives the overall judgment after costs and benefits.
Practice passage
A university trialed recorded feedback instead of written comments on short assignments. Students said recordings took longer to review, but they also said the instructor’s priorities were easier to understand. [missing sentence] The department therefore kept recorded feedback as an option rather than making it compulsory.
Write one sentence for the gap using one expression from this guide. Then explain:
- Which earlier fact stays true?
- Does your sentence concede, reverse, compare, correct, or judge overall?
- How does it prepare for the department’s mixed decision?
One defensible answer is: On balance, the recordings improved clarity, but the extra review time argued against making them the only feedback format. It weighs both stated points and prepares for an optional, rather than universal, policy.
