Cambridge C2 Open Cloze: Grammar and Fixed Phrases

Published Updated 9 min read Editorial standards

A learner connects passage cards, context clues, and precise word choices into one coherent route

Cambridge C2 open cloze is not an invitation to place an impressive content word in every gap. Often, the words already on the page tell you that one small grammatical word is missing.

The proposal was convincing up to a ______; it did not explain how the archive would pay for long-term storage.

The answer is point. The fixed frame is up to a point, which accepts a claim only within limits and commonly prepares the reader for the boundary that follows. Degree and level relate to limits, but they do not complete this phrase.

Cambridge currently describes C2 Reading and Use of English Part 2 as a modified cloze with eight gaps. You think of the word that best fits each gap; there are no multiple-choice options. Cambridge's information for candidates adds that each answer is a single word, never a phrase or contraction. The official exam page says the part focuses on grammar with some vocabulary. The paper has seven parts and 53 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes.

This lesson concentrates on the grammatical and discourse frames that make an answer recoverable. Find more task practice in the Cambridge C1/C2 vocabulary hub and the broader Exam English hub.

Six discourse phrases, six different jobs

Whereas: put two facts side by side

Whereas is a conjunction that contrasts two complete clauses:

The first gallery emphasizes chronology, whereas the second is organized by theme.

It marks contrast, not cause or time. Although adds concession: one fact holds despite another. Whereas simply compares. While can mark either contrast or simultaneity, so do not force whereas as the only answer in an open slot when while would work equally well. Use it as a reading clue, then let grammar and fixed wording decide genuinely unique gaps.

Nonetheless: concede, then continue

Nonetheless is a formal adverb meaning that the next point holds in spite of the previous one:

The catalogue omits several dates. Nonetheless, its account of the restoration is useful.

The first fact remains true. On the contrary would reject an idea or state its opposite, so it cannot perform the same move. Because nonetheless is an adverb, it does not take a noun phrase like despite, and it does not introduce a subordinate clause like although. When it links independent clauses without a coordinator, use a full stop or semicolon, not a comma splice.

On balance: a judgment after weighing factors

On balance frames a conclusion reached after relevant factors have been considered together:

On balance, the advantages of digitization outweigh the loss of direct contact with the documents.

Overall can express a general view without foregrounding a weighing process, and the two often overlap. In an open cloze, a visible frame such as On ______, makes balance secure. Meaning alone may not.

On the contrary: reject and reverse

On the contrary asserts the opposite of an idea that is rejected:

The new display did not simplify the debate; on the contrary, it exposed further disagreements.

The negative clause stays true, and the following clause strengthens it by giving the reverse of the rejected idea. On the other hand adds a second consideration while the first remains standing. The article is fixed: on the contrary, not on contrary.

In effect: state what the facts amount to

In effect presents a practical consequence, substance, or paraphrase:

Giving every department an unrestricted veto would, in effect, prevent any change.

This is different from the status expression in “the rule is in effect,” which means the rule is operating. In both cases, the fixed form contains effect, not affect.

Understanding is only the first step.

Up to a point: accept within a boundary

Up to a point says a claim is valid only within limits and often prepares the reader for a counterpoint:

The criticism is fair up to a point, but it ignores the project's revised scope.

To some extent overlaps. The tendency is that up to a point foregrounds the coming limit, but that is not an absolute division. A deterministic gap should expose enough of the frame to fix point, rather than pretending the two complete phrases can always be separated by meaning.

Worked eight-gap open cloze

Complete the original passage with one word in each gap. Do not write contractions or more than one word.

A library without labels

A university library removed the subject labels from one reading room as part of an experiment. The old catalogue remained in (1) ______, so visitors could still locate a particular book even though they had to inspect the shelves rather than follow a visible subject category. The change did not make browsing random. On the (2) ______, the shelves still followed a deliberate sequence, but that sequence was less visible.

The designers' claim that labels always restrict discovery was persuasive only up to a (3) ______. Labels can narrow expectations, but they also help readers locate material efficiently. On (4) ______, the experiment worked best for visitors who had time to explore, whereas those seeking one title often preferred the ordinary catalogue.

The trial revealed a principle to (5) ______ the university will return: removing guidance changes a task rather than simply making it freer. It is not the absence of labels (6) ______ itself that encourages curiosity, but the alternative clues around the books. The experiment was not so useful (7) ______ to justify extending it to every floor. The room will remain unlabelled, nonetheless, in order (8) ______ researchers can continue observing how visitors navigate it.

Answers with grammar evidence

Gap Answer Why the answer is fixed
1 effect remain in effect means the old catalogue continues operating. This status use is distinct from discourse-framing in effect, but the spelling and fixed noun are the same.
2 contrary On the contrary rejects the possible inference that browsing became random and states the opposite.
3 point up to a point accepts the claim within a limit, which the next sentence supplies.
4 balance On balance introduces a judgment after the benefits and limitations have been weighed.
5 which A relative pronoun follows the printed preposition in a principle to which the university will return.
6 in The fixed emphatic frame is not X in itself ... but Y.
7 as The degree-and-result frame is not so + adjective + as to + verb.
8 that in order that + clause expresses the purpose of keeping the room unlabelled.

Every answer is one word. Notice that four gaps complete fixed discourse frames, while four depend primarily on clause grammar. The paragraph also contains whereas and nonetheless, but neither is made into an open gap because plausible substitutes could survive there. Deterministic practice is more useful than a forced answer key.

How to solve a C2 open cloze

1. Read the words on both sides

For gap 3, the visible sequence up to a ___ is more decisive than the general topic. For gap 7, the printed words on both sides reveal the not so ... as to frame.

2. Name the missing grammatical job

Ask whether the blank needs a relative pronoun, preposition, auxiliary, determiner, conjunction, or a word inside a fixed expression. “A word about libraries” is not a useful category.

3. Rebuild the complete frame

Say the unit silently: in effect, on the contrary, up to a point, on balance, in itself, so that. Check that you are supplying only the missing word, not rewriting what is already printed.

4. Check the discourse move

Grammar may leave several candidates until you ask what the next clause does. Does it weigh factors, concede a problem, reject an assumption, express purpose, or state practical substance?

5. Re-read the entire sentence

Insert the answer and verify agreement, punctuation, meaning, and spelling. A plausible phrase can still be wrong if it duplicates a printed word or changes the relationship between clauses.

Contrast without connector roulette

These three moves are related but not interchangeable:

  • whereas compares two facts: The north wing is chronological, whereas the south wing is thematic.
  • nonetheless concedes a fact and states what holds anyway: The map is incomplete; nonetheless, it is useful.
  • on the contrary rejects an idea and asserts its opposite: The redesign did not reduce choice; on the contrary, it added two routes.

An open-cloze question must still be solved from its exact frame. In a bare sentence, whereas, while, and but may sometimes all express a valid contrast. Do not train yourself to believe that the most formal option is automatically the official answer.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a complete phrase when the page already supplies the rest of it.
  • Looking for a topic noun instead of identifying the missing grammatical function.
  • Using on the contrary for two compatible considerations.
  • Treating nonetheless as if it were a preposition: nonetheless the delay is not the target structure.
  • Joining two independent clauses with only a comma before nonetheless.
  • Assuming whereas means “at the same time.” Its core use here is contrast.
  • Claiming up to a point and to some extent never overlap.
  • Confusing the noun effect with the verb affect inside the fixed phrase in effect.

Quick one-word check

Complete each gap with one word.

  1. The report did not weaken the case; on the ______, it supplied the missing dates.
  2. The archive is valuable up to a ______, but it contains no records from the final decade.
  3. The temporary rule remains in ______ until Friday, when the committee will vote on a replacement.
  4. On ______, the lower-cost plan offers the better combination of access and preservation.
  5. The pilot was not so extensive ______ to represent every department.

Answers: 1 contrary, because the second clause reverses the rejected idea; 2 point, completing the limit frame; 3 effect, completing the status phrase remain in effect; 4 balance, marking a weighed judgment; 5 as, completing not so ... as to.

Fresh practice

Write a 120-word open cloze about a museum changing its ticket policy. Remove exactly eight single words: two prepositions inside fixed phrases, two clause connectors, one relative word, one determiner, one auxiliary, and one word controlled by a discourse frame. For every gap, try to defend a rival answer. If the rival fits the grammar and meaning equally well, restore that word and remove a different one.
