Make the distinction clear

A design objection becomes more useful when it identifies the affected action rather than calling the screen bad.

Vocabulary for this situation

Three expressions. Three precise jobs.

Explain competing benefits

trade-off

01

A trade-off is a situation or decision in which getting more of one thing means accepting less of another. Name both the gain and the cost when you state one.

“The trade-off is more visible actions but less room for readable labels.”

Usage note: Identify both the benefit and the cost.

Challenge a request constructively

push back

02

To push back is to challenge, resist, or renegotiate something so a concern is addressed before it moves forward; in scheduling, push something back means move it later, and the noun pushback means resistance or objections received.

“I'd push back on asking users to enter those details twice.”

Usage note: Give the task-based reason for the challenge.

Practice “push back” →

Examine an unclear concern

unpack

03

To unpack something is to break a complex idea, decision, or set of implications into its component parts so people can examine them one at a time — more than just restating or summarizing it faster.

“Can we unpack what feels too busy about this screen?”

Usage note: Breaking down a concern is different from rejecting it.
