Make the distinction clear

A small study can support a specific finding without proving a whole redesign works for everyone.

Vocabulary for this situation

Three expressions. Three precise jobs.

Describe an expectation mismatch

counterintuitive

01

Counterintuitive describes something that runs against an intuition or expectation. State whose expectation was contradicted; the word alone does not establish that the result is good, bad, true, or false.

“Participants expected the arrow to expand the section; navigating away felt counterintuitive.”

Usage note: Unfamiliar does not automatically mean contrary to expectation.

Describe supporting evidence

bear out

02

To use evidence, data, or results to confirm that a claim, prediction, or decision made earlier was correct.

“The sessions bear out the concern about the hidden control.”

Usage note: State which claim the evidence supports.

Limit a research conclusion

caveat

03

A caveat is a specific limitation that either qualifies an otherwise confident statement or independently flags how far a claim, plan, dataset, or analysis can be trusted.

“There is one caveat: we tested only this flow.”

Usage note: Make the scope limit concrete rather than adding vague caution.

Practice “caveat” →
